Description

For its 50th birthday, Sociology at Edinburgh is inviting its ‘community’, critical and uncritical friends, sympathizers, fellow sociologists and social scientists, and anyone wondering about sociology in and at Edinburgh, to its anniversary conference, to celebrate but also to jointly reflect on and discuss (some) sociological traditions as well as new challenges.

In order to do so, we have invited scholars to help us take stock and highlight key turning points and debates in areas of the contemporary world that they and we have explored or are starting to explore – nationalism, intimate lives and their narratives, social demography, South and now East Asia, finance, energy and sustainability, the digital, and critical sociology.

Engaging with the contemporary has meant not only grappling with and seeking to shape contemporary issues but also of course teaching and learning sociology – both eagerly and critically. Our conference will also be a place for remembering and reflecting on 50 years of teacher/student exchange, specific courses, and those myriads of structured and haphazard interactions that constitute what is now called the ‘student experience’.
